A revised timetable: EES in October 2025 and ETIAS at the end of 2026

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now expected to go live in October 2025 with a gradual roll-out over 6 months to allow member states to adapt to the new procedures.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced in the last quarter of 2026. Both will impact how British travellers enter the Schengen Area. Here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth journey for your group.

What Is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The EES is a new automated border system that will replace manual passport stamping for non-EU travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area. Instead of stamps, travellers' details—such as name, biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans), and entry/exit records—will be registered digitally.

Originally planned for October 2024, the launch of the EES has been postponed and is now expected to go live in October 2025.

Key Points for School Groups:

  • • Applies to all UK passport holders travelling to the EU.

  • • Biometric data will be required on first entry.

  • • Intended to speed up border checks but could initially cause delays as travellers, airport and ports adjust to the new system.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new travel authorisation system similar to the USA’s ESTA. It will be required for visa-exempt travellers, including British citizens, visiting the EU for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period). This is not a visa, but a pre-travel screening that must be completed before arrival.

While ETIAS was initially expected to launch in mid-2025, the latest update confirms that it is now scheduled for the last quarter of 2026.

Key Points for School Groups:

  • • Costs €7 per person (free for under 18s and over 70s).

  • • Valid for three years or until passport expiry.

  • • Can be applied for online in advance and is linked to the traveller’s passport.

What This Means for North47 School Trips

With these changes set to impact our 2025/2026 ski season, flight and coach groups will need to plan to avoid travel disruptions. While ETIAS is not yet live, we do recommend:

  • • Ensuring all travellers have valid passports with at least six months’ validity.

  • • Factoring in potential delays at border control due to biometric checks.

  • • Keeping an eye on further updates as the launch date approaches.

At North47, we’re committed to keeping our groups informed and prepared for any travel regulation changes. We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as soon as they are made available.
